The Career Center is pleased to announce that it has again received gold level national certification with OutforWork. The OutforWork Network (OFW)  is a national organization serving to complement the efforts of colleges and universities with assisting all students, including those who identify as lesbian, gay, transgender, or queer, with career development and exploration.

“The Career Center has found that students are often unsure of what employers may be welcoming to them, whether they should include LGBTQ leadership roles or activities on a resume, or even if they should mention LGBTQ experiences in a job interview,” said Maureen Roach, Career Center senior assistant director and advisor for LGBTQ students. “Our network with OutforWork is just one of a number of initiatives we are implementing to empower students from underrepresented groups to help them be engaged participants in a global society, help them to cultivate relationships with employers who are allies to the LGBTQ community, and provide tips on how to be successful job candidates and employees in the workplace without compromising their identity.”

As part of its membership with OutforWork, students can attend the National LGBTQ & Ally College Student Career Conference to be held September 26-28 in Washington, D.C. This conference includes breakout sessions, workshops, and keynote speakers that will educate and empower students in their transition from academia to the workplace. In addition, OFW membership provides a job board and database of inclusive employers for students to search for internships and full-time jobs.

The OutforWork membership is a part of the Career Center’s Cultural Career Network initiatives. Students interested in OutforWork should contact Maureen Roach. Faculty or employers interested in the Career Center’s diversity initiatives should contact Pamela Cooper.
