Approximately 50% of Chicago Public School (CPS) teachers leave the district within five years. This trend was at the heart of why Illinois State University established the Chicago Teacher Education Pipeline (CTEP) in 2003. The three-year retention rate for CTEP alumni who work in urban schools is better than 90%. Teacher candidates who have participated in its programs have thrived in urban neighborhoods where they live and work thanks to the community-immersion model built upon partnerships with Chicago schools and nonprofits, neighborhood residents, as well as Illinois State faculty, staff, and alumni.

The complex teacher retention issue will be at the forefront of the CTEP’s first-ever urban teacher education conference, a free-to-attend event on Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13 at Hotel Chicago.

About the Conference

Staying the Course: Resiliency in Urban Schools will focus on what teachers must know and do to excel in urban, hard-to-staff schools. Public school teachers, university faculty, and community-based organizers will share their research on how teachers can continue to stay the course in the Chicago schools and communities where they teach, learn, live, and lead. Illinois State’s education faculty, staff, alumni, students, and school and community partners are invited to register to attend and/or submit a presentation proposal.

Illinois State University faculty, staff, students, and alumni working in Chicago Public Schools, and CTEP community partners are encouraged to attend and submit a presentation proposal. Please direct inquiries to TeacherPipeline@IllinoisState.edu.
